Gala brings awareness to adult literacy problems

The Adult Reading Center (ARC) in Pearland held their second annual Red Carpet Gala at the Hilton Garden Inn on Saturday, Oct. 11. Approximately 200 people came out to support the organization.

The theme was “Casino Night,” and patrons enjoyed roulette, craps, poker, blackjack and slot machines while a DJ kept lively music going for those who wanted to dance. A buffet was available, along with a bar and soft drinks. A silent auction was held in the lobby, which included signed prints, jerseys and game balls from J.J. Watt, Brett Favre, Earl Campbell, Roger Staubach, Nolan Ryan and more. Inside, a table held items such as a 32” television, a streaming device for TV/Internet services and many baskets full of goodies donated for a raffle.

Local sponsors included Pollo Tropical, Hometown Bank of Pearland, la Madeline, Pearland Animal Hospital, A&A Cleaning Services, Pearland Pediatrics, Pearland’s Best Coupons, Frost Bank, Pearland Medical Center, New First National Bank, JWayne Productions, Law Office of Kerri Astell, The Ivy District, Heritage Bank, First Choice Emergency Room, CenterPoint Energy, Prosperity Bank, Westside Veterinary Hospital, Texas Splish Splash Car Wash, Pearland City Council Members Scott Sherman, Keith Ordeneaux, Gary Moore and Greg Hill, Congressman Olson, Senator Taylor, Representative Thompson, Commissioner and Mrs. Stacy Adams, Mr. Adam Blake Whittaker and Mrs. Jennifer Whittaker.

[General Educational Development certificate]. We also help them with workforce skills, like helping them find a job, writing a resume, helping them learn interviewing skills and even entrepreneurship.”

Pillow said that not only do acheter viagra they help non-English speakers, but have many other programs for low-literacy individuals, people who need extra training for job advancement and people dealing with Dyslexia. Last year, the ARC served 775 individuals. The programs are in high demand, so interested parties need to make an appointment by calling 281-485-1000.
