Local businesses help Dawson culinary arts program

In its second year of operation, The culinary arts program at Dawson High School prepares individuals for a wide variety of entry level positions in the food service industry. This program, in partnership with Alvin Community College, provides all of the educational components required for certification through the American Culinary Federation. The objective of the program is to give students an array of culinary and management skills that are utilized in today’s food service industry.

The community was invited to join students of the culinary arts program recently at Mimi’s Café for a delicious way to raise money!

Everyone enjoyed a delicious meal in a fun atmosphere while earning funds for the students. Mimi’s Café donated 15 percent of each sale back to the culinary program.

The program has been very popular with the Northern Brazoria County Education Alliance stakeholders. An Advisory committee has been formed under the direction of Michalyn Ordeneaux, a retired Homemaking instructor from Pearland ISD.

The Advisory team consists of representatives from area restaurants. Such include Big Humphrey’s, Casa Ole’, Mimi’s Café, Texas Roadhouse, The Fish Company at Bass Pro Shop, Hilton Garden Inn, BJ’s, and Spring Creek Barbeque, just to name a few.

Along with Ms. Ordeneaux, additional community representatives have stepped up to fund scholarships to students entering the Culinary Program in 2010. Others include Billie Jo Moffett, Dr. Susan Lenamon, Brian and Denis Armbruster, Susie and Jerry Koza, Ricky and Jamie Ford, Lindsay Smith, Big Humphrey’s Pizza and Casa Ole’. The NBCEA gives a heartfelt thanks to all the scholarship donors who have helped these students enter the program.
